The Observatory

These images were taken with my Meade 8" LX200 SCT telescope from the driveway at my brother-in-law's house 20 miles West of Palm Beach, FL.

These were taken using a Topica TP-505D/3 (0.04 lux, 510x492, 420 TV lines, f/1.2) B/W NTSC video camera ($130) from SuperCircuits (their SKU PC23C) combined with a Play Snappy digitizer ($140) on my laptop. I don't quite have the hang of focusing it just yet, or maybe the video cable was too long. Think of Hubble, before the repairs. These looked a lot better on the video monitor and quite a bit better in the eyepiece.

An update: I was stupidly not using an eyepiece. That explains why the images are crap. I now have, and know how to use, my Meade tele-extender which allows me to use eyepieces in conjunction with the video camera. Next time there is a clear night and I am not working that night (like waiting for major planetary alignments), I'll download some much better images, even without the 416XT.

For how good this very inexpensive video digitizer setup can actually look, you might want to visit the web site of the Richard Feynman observatory.

The Meade PICTOR 416XT has arrived! It took long ehough.

Once I get the freaking thing to work over the SCSI interface, I'll take some much better shots. I don't have the patience to download images across the serial interface.
